Daily Scripture Reading: Psalm 72:1-7, 18-19; Isaiah 40:1-11; John 1:19-28

To say that my grandfather and I are close would be an understatement. From the beginning I have been “his baby.” In all my years of growing up, he never missed a recital, awards ceremony, or graduation. He was there to pick me up after school, help me practice the piano, and make the best chocolate milkshakes. His years playing at the Hollywood Canteen during World War II and shooting “Happy-Tats,” an unlucky cat, have made the prime spot in his story telling premieres. Most importantly, he has taught me about Christian life and service. I have seen a heart soften and tender hearted tears well up as he tells the story of his dad’s conversion. He has been a pillar for me throughout my life, and one that I cannot imagine being without.

As someone who has never lost someone close to them, these past few months have been difficult; I have seen this man of great strength weaken and become confused, the man who has held my hand many a time in need of my own. Through these trying times that he has faced and continues to face, there is the light. I have watched my grandmother love him in ways that emulate Christ’s love for the church--steadfast, honest, faithful, and endless. Through them, I have witnessed a true testament to the power of love anchored in Christ. Most importantly, I see the light of hope in the way that he courageously faces his own frailty and humanity. Through his hope for his future, I continue to learn to yearn earnestly and passionately for the promise of Heaven and everlasting joyfreedom to worship the Creator, the everlasting light in whom there is no darkness.
