Our teaching and preaching theme for 2017 is Church Inside Out. The past several years have brought about a multitude of changes for our church community – changes in leadership, adopting a new mission statement (the 4 E’s), changes in worship practice, changes in membership…we could keep going, but you get the idea.
This year provides us with a natural opportunity to learn together – how are we going to live with these changes? That’s what Church Inside Out is all about. A call to re-focus and re-center ourselves so that we can move into God’s future for us from a place of trust and confidence in who we are, who God is, and what God is calling us to do together.
Church Inside Out is a play-on-words we hope points us in the direction of three big Spiritual Growth questions for the year:
1. Does my “inside” match my “outside”? This is a question about becoming a new person in Christ. We’d like to move in the direction of integrity between our hearts, minds, souls, and bodies.
2. Am I more self-centered or others-centered? This is a question about practicing, in Christ, a new way to be in relationship. We’d like to move in the direction of being others-centered in the same way Christ is others-centered.
3. What is God up to in the world and how are we, as a community, a part of it? This is a question about becoming a new kind of community in Christ. We’d like to discern God’s will for our community and look for ways to join what God is already accomplishing through Christ.
Our class topics, sermon series, and small group discussions will help us explore these questions together. I’m excited to see where the journey takes us as God continues to draw us deeper into his love for us, his love for others, and his love for this world!
